Buccaneer Queen Cabo San Lucas

By Julie Miche Leave a Comment

Pirate Time On The Buccaneer Queen!

I booked an adventure on the Buccaneer Queen Pirate Ship.  It’s a 96 foot long wooden replica of an ancient galleon that sailed a long time ago!   The ship has many different adventures to pick from.  I chose whale watching.

Aye Matie!  I’ve changed my name to Slick Sally, acquired an eye patch, a parrot and was good to go!

I had such a good time on the ship. It was very entertaining. The crew was fabulous, and so much fun! Best of all, I saw lots of whales… Wow, what amazing, beautiful creatures they are.

Playa Grande Resort Cabo San Lucas

By Julie Miche Leave a Comment

I’m back Cabo! Playa Grande Resort

Ok… It’s official, I have a Cabo addiction!  There I said it… I feel that it’s a pretty harmless one though!  And one that I absolutely refuse to give up!

My playground of choice this time was The Ridge at Playa Grande Resort.  It’s on the Pacific side of Cabo, and steps away from El Arco.  It’s proximity to downtown is a definite plus too! I seem to keep gravitating to this side of Cabo.  I love the serenity of the beach on this side.

I think my favorite time of day is quickly becoming Happy Hour, poolside with Pina Coladas!

Solmar Fishing Fleet

By Julie Miche Leave a Comment

Time To Fish!  Solmar Fishing Fleet

Growing up in Chicago, I spent a good portion of my childhood fishing Wisconsin rivers and lakes with my Dad.  I learned how to make fishing jigs, and bait hooks with worms and minnows. I had never fished in the ocean before, so I figured now was my chance!

Solmar has a fleet of boats to choose from, and they all come fully equipped.  You are provided with a Captain and a mate. The fishing tackle, rods and reels are all included.  Food and drinks can be ordered through Solmar, or you can bring your own.

The only thing I had to provide was the Dramamine!  I highly recommend taking some, or you might find yourself desperately wishing you had later!  And, you don’t want to ruin the experience of sportfishing in Cabo!

Go big or go home!  I booked an eight hour fishing tour.  I wanted to catch some big fish, and I figured it might take some time!  It was time to play with the boys… At least the ones that know how to bait a hook!

Plan on getting up early… As in before the sun comes up!  I was on the boat before daybreak, and ready to go… Ok, I was really still pretty sleepy and the Dramamine was kicking in!  I severely needed more coffee!  I was really excited though.

I was surprised at how strong the tuna were, and how hard of a fight they put up! I was actually lifted off of my chair, and almost took an unexpected morning swim!

By the time we had to head in, we had caught our limit of tuna and mahi mahi for the boat. Once you’re back onshore, you can have your fish filleted and bring it back to your hotel. You can also have it sent to one of the restaurants to prepare for you. I did both! I gave the Captain the rest. There was just too much to keep!

Give me the beach!  – Hotel Solmar Suites

I stayed downtown the last time I was in Cabo San Lucas.  Although, it was fun, I wanted to be on the ocean this time.  I went online, and found availability at Hotel Solmar Suites.  I crossed my fingers, hoping it would be everything I was envisioning!

I think I actually had to pinch myself when I arrived… I was pretty sure I had just found paradise!  The suites were super cute, and right on the beach facing the Pacific!

What more could a girl ask for?  Hmmm… Well ok, there probably is more, but I digress!

I had found what I was looking for at Solmar…  Beauty, privacy, and close proximity to downtown and the marina!

The tamales are served with one of the most delicious Mole sauces I’ve ever had! Can you guess what their specialty is? Moles… Of course! The restaurant has a fun, artsy atmosphere too!

Los Cabos San Lucas

I Have Arrived In Cabo San Lucas!

I’m so exited!  I’m finally here!  I booked a suite at Siesta Suites right in the heart of  Cabo.  It was easy on the budget, and it’s near everything!  It’s absolutely adorable!  The one bedroom suites have a separate bedroom, a mini kitchen, a living room area, and Wifi is free.

The balcony overlooks an Italian restaurant named Salvatore’s.  Oh my God!  I could eat there every night!  It’s that good!  Don’t miss the Lasagne that is served on Wednesday nights.   The portions are large, and SO good!  Another fave of mine was the boneless beef short ribs, served with garlic mashed potatoes.  I have only one word.. YUMMY!

Just try to walk by without going in… I double dog dare ya!  The aroma of the food is intoxicating, and WILL pull you in!  Be sure to make a reservation. The restaurant is in an outdoor garden, and fills up quickly.  It’s located on Zapata between Guerrero and Hidalgo.

I’m not quite sure how I ever made it to another restaurant, but I did!  For authentic Mexican cuisine, head over to Mi Casa.  It’s a beautiful restaurant, located in the oldest adobe building in Cabo.  The menu is large, and the food is fantastic.  Make sure you leave room for dessert. The El Flan al Caramelo is fabulous!

Time To Explore Todos Santos

By Julie Miche Leave a Comment

Todos Santos – Day 2

The morning started with a wake up call from several roosters.  Wow!  I was not expecting that!  Didn’t they know how early it was, and that I am NOT a morning person?

I hadn’t got much sleep last night either, because I found out that Flying Cockroaches EXIST! Ok, it was just one… But, I’m sure it’s friends were hanging around somewhere. Just as I was about to dose off, I heard  this strange buzzing noise near the pillow.  I quickly turned on the lights, and jumped out of bed.  There it was!  It was on the pillow next to mine… It was huge, and had wings!

Not willing to share my bed with a cockroach, I ran to get something to kill it!  Yes, kill it… I am not a believer in the bug relocation plan.  My weapons of choice….  A broom and hairspray. The plan was to douse it, so that it couldn’t fly.  Next, smash it with the broom.

My plan worked!   Now, I could sleep… I had killed the giant flying cockroach!  Unfortunately, sleep was not happening.   I sat in bed, with the lights on, blankets tucked tightly around my body.  I was wide awake for the next several hours.  I kept wondering if there were more of them, and if they were living in the palapa roof above my head.  I was convinced, that every little noise was another one of it’s family members.  After completely freaking myself out, I finally managed to fall asleep.

Thankfully, I didn’t see anymore the rest of my stay!  Out of every bug in the entire world, cockroaches are the ones that creep me out the most.  Silverfish come in second.

After a sufficient amount of caffeine was consumed, I headed out to explore the town.  I did, afterall, come to see an art festival!

Todos Santos, Baja California Sur

Two Days In Todos Santos

I decided to venture off to the Todos Santos Art Festival since this was my second trip to Cabo San Lucas.  I wanted to experience a different part of Mexico, and this sounded like a fun event. I didn’t want to do the usual hotel thing, so I started looking for other options.  I was lucky enough to find a casita in the downtown historic area.  I wanted a different kind of adventure, and it looks like I’m in for one!

Here’s the directions I received via email.

Hi Julie,

The first rule is to drive very cautiously, keep watch on all the cars around you (including the ones coming up fat), and expect the unexpected.  The unexpected absolutely *will* happen!  You will get passed on the left, on the right, in very unusual places.

Now, a bit about the roads and driving.  First, signals and stop signs are ‘run’ more often here than in most parts of the States.  Drive caustiously.  Coming up the hill out of Cabo, the road has little or no shoulder in a few spots, with the road edge eroding away, so keep an eye out.  I make it a point to *never* take my eyes off any road in Baja, unlike sometimes in the States. There is much more randomness here, much less regularity.

Also, you will be driving through *OPEN RANGE* — meaning cows, burros, goats, feral pigs, horses, and other creatures may wind up on the road or next to the road.  Goats are fast, and come in bunches, and one can never be sure if all the goats in a bunch are accounted for.  Be careful.  Cows are *very* slow to get out of your way, and can sometimes be unnervingly close to the side of the road.  Big and scary.  Horses can be twitchy, make sure you give riders and horses a cautious berth.

If you see car(s) coming towards you with their flashers on , it often means that there’s some problem or hazard up ahead, most often livestock near or on the road, but it could be other things, such as men working.  If you see any orange cones in the road, or other signs men at work, slow down considerably.  These guys don’t have the same amount of space on the road protecting them as people in the states, and need a bit more awareness from the driving public.

On the highway, a left-turn signal from a car ahead *often* (not always) means that they’re telling you to pass.  So, you could unwittingly be signaling a left turn, and have someone come screaming by you  on the left, or worse.  If there’s someone close behind on the highway, you may want to go past your left turn, turn around when safe, and come back.  Or, pull off on the right, let traffic pass, and make your left.

Be cautious going over the many rises you’ll encounter.  We’ve topped out over one, and had drivers coming at us in both lanes.  Exciting.

In about an hour or so, you’ll come into the south end of Todos Santos.  After you pass over the tope (speed Bump) at the top of the hill, you will continue downhill for several blocks (more topes) until you come to a street light (actually, *the* street light). You’ll now be on Benito Juarez, the main street of Todos Santos.

You’ll go up hill several blocks, going up to the lovely white adobe building at the top of the hill, and then a short block further, to the left-hand intersection with Calle Topete.  Please stop at the stop sign and be aware others may not… Turn left on Topete, and enjoy the next short 3 blocks through the main streets of  the Old Todos Santos.  Many of the buildings you are passing are connected to one another through patio areas in the center area of the blocks — these are family-built casas, some of which still house the same families who built them.

After those 3 too-short blocks, you’ll take a difficult left onto Calle Pilar, just after passing ‘La Arca’ and its lovely gardens on the left. There will be a refreshment stand (big ‘Pepsi’ sign — ‘Rico’s Raspados’) on the corner as you turn, then a wrought-iron gate and a long low adobe wall.  Jardin de Pilar is next on your right, with a tall brown gate, a white/rock wall, and another tall brown gate. There is no sign.

Just park at the second brown steel gate on the right, and enter the first gate, and come on down the driveway.  When you get to the gate to the gardens, give a shout, and we’ll take you to your garden casita.

Hope this helps,

Jardin de Pilar

Holy Crap!  This guy was thorough to say the least!

After this account of driving in Mexico, I wasn’t sure I wanted to!  I was, however, intrigued by the possibility of encountering a herd of fast moving goats!  And, what exactly did he mean by creatures?  Maybe a Chupacabra?

Legend has it that they puncture the necks of goats, and drain all there blood.  And, goats seem to be plentiful in the area.  Hmmmm….

Well, the drive went smooth, and without incident.  There were no goats, horses, burros, or Chupacabra.  There were a couple of cows along the way, but they didn’t look like they were moving any time soon.

After driving on well paved roads, I turned onto a dirt road… That shockingly wasn’t mentioned.  I circled around a couple times convinced I was lost.

This can’t be it!

I finally got out of the car, wondering what exactly I had got myself into. I went up to the gate, and gave a yell. The owner came out, and in I went. I was pleasantly surprised once I entered. It was a beautiful tropical jungle behind the gates.  I had found the secret garden!

Cabo San Lucas ATV Ride

By Julie Miche 1 Comment

The Ride of My Life!  Cabo San Lucas ATV

First and foremost, I must thank God, Jesus, Buddha, Bodhisattva’s, and all others who watch down upon me and keep me safe!  Thank you for keeping me alive, and for the most part without injury during my Cabo San Lucas ATV experience.

So, for today’s Cabo San Lucas adventure my friend and I decided to ride ATV’s.  We found a tour with a sunset ride on the beach. There was a group of about ten people joining the tour. It sounded perfect! I had never been riding before, so I was pretty excited! After getting our helmets and goggles, we were given instructions on how to operate the vehicle.  It pretty much was, here’s the gas, these are the brakes.  Wow!  How easy!  And, oh how naive to think such thoughts!

Cabo San Lucas, ATV tour in Cabo San Lucas
Ready to go!

We started off in a single file line, with my friend and I at the end.  We went onto the trail, and into the mountains.   At first, I thought it was pretty fun… then the trail quickly become extremely rutted, and uneven.  The ATV was harder to handle than I thought it would be too… But, that was just part of the adventure right? About fifteen minutes in, I was wondering where in God’s name the beach was, and was struggling to maintain control of the beast I was on! The trail started to climb again, and I encountered a quick switchback.  I almost lost it on the turn, and was somewhat taken aback to see cattle on the trail so close to me.  I could have reached out and touched them!

This is not the beach!

After finally making it through the switchback, I sped up so I could catch the group.  I wondered how my friend had handled that part of the trail, and kept looking back to see where he was.  He never appeared! Ten minutes passed, and I finally made it to the riverbed where everyone was waiting.  There seemed to be something going on with the guides… And still no sign of my friend.

I motioned for a guide to come over.  I asked if he knew what happened to the guy riding behind me.  In very broken English, and lots of hand motions, he said something about tipping, paramedics, and he’s somewhere over there! I freaked to say the least!  I tried to get more info, but all I got was he is ok.  I still had no idea where he was, if he was ok, or had been take to a Mexican hospital.  And, I still had to complete two more hours of the ride!

I had to totally focus, like I had never focused before.  I just kept riding, believing he was really ok. Off I went… What else could I do?

About ten minutes into the trail, another insane curve appeared as we started to climb even higher.  My steering was not quite as it should be, and I kinda missed the trail!  The ATV went left and up, and I was stuck… Very, very stuck and teetering, almost falling off the edge! All I could think about at that moment was that we had turned down the insurance for the ATV’s, and now we might have to pay for two! A broken ATV from Cabo San Lucas was not the souvenir I had in mind.

Reality kicked in quickly, as I realized I was being left behind with no sign of help!  This was not the time to think about insurance! I jumped off the ATV, taking the chance that it wouldn’t roll.  I had already messed up my leg earlier, and didn’t want this thing to crush me.  Once I was off, I tried to put it in reverse… Oh yeah, they didn’t show us how to do that!

I kept trying to push, pull and move it while hitting the gas.  I kept hoping something would finally work.  Everyone was getting farther and farther away.  Thoughts of being stuck by myself, in the middle of Mexican mountains, kicked in my adrenalin.  Somehow I managed to move it!  I jumped back on and found the group.

At this point, all I was doing was swearing to myself that if I get out of this, I will never set foot on an ATV again!  And, then there was another switchback… I guess it’s clear by now that the sharper turns and I were not doing so well!  Once again, I went off the trail.

This time I plowed straight through eight feet of brush, screaming, and wondering where the hell I was going to come out!  “Lucky” for me, I exited on flat land and could see the group in the distance.

When I started to get close, I saw a couple people standing off to the side.  As the sun beamed through the dust, I thought I saw my friend… But, then again I could have been hallucinating! But, no I wasn’t!  It was him, and he wasn’t hurt!

Apparently, he had almost flipped his ATV too, but had been assisted by one of the guides. They brought him down an easier route once they realized he was ok. We continued on, and finally made it onto the beach.

We were rewarded with a beautiful sunset and a bottle of water… I’m thinking they should have gave us tequila!

I was, however, relieved to finally be on the beach, and actually riding along the coastline.

I’m alive!

Several hours have passed since this grand adventure, and we are now laughing about it.  Yes, we had some drinks to help get us there!  We are thinking of keeping the rest of the trip a little more low key… That’s the plan at least!

Sunset Booze Cruise in Cabo San Lucas

Who’s ready for a Cabo San Lucas booze cruise?  I am… I am!  A catamaran cruise is the perfect way to enjoy a couple hours out on the ocean, and take in the beautiful views of the Arch in Los Cabos and the coast.

I jumped onto one of LaPrincesa’s catamarans for a sunset booze cruise. There were whales jumping around the boat the entire time, plus the sunset was absolutely gorgeous!

The crew was fabulous, and of course… There was lot’s of booze! I had so much fun! I highly recommend checking it out if you’re planning a trip to Cabo San Lucas!
